Solar Powered Golf Cart

Tasha Ramos and the modified solar powered golf cart.

UNLV Solar Site has decided to modify their cart to a solar powered vehicle. Tasha Ramos works at the site and has to drive back and forth from the main campus to the site several times a day. These types of carts need to be charged nightly by plugging them into an outlet with a charger. By adding this photovoltaic (PV) panel to the top of the cart this chore has been eliminated and the cart does not need to be charged unless sunlight is absent.

To the right is an image of the cart that was modified. Everything is the same as a regular cart except that on the canopy there is the PV panel. There are still 6 batteries under the bench just like your average cart. The maintenance for this set up is minimal. It is always left in the sun so that it can charge and is wiped off with a soft cloth every week. The cleaning of the panel is important to the operation. Dirt on the surface can bring the efficiency down by over 20%.
